All of Creation – Intro

In Junior High, during Wednesday Night Service at church, I remember my pastor showing us a series called “Planet Earth” (great series, I highly recommend). While watching that, I remember feeling absolutely floored at how complex and beautiful this world is.   If you’ve never watched the show, it’s basically a series that captures natural phenomena in the world that has been untouched by humans. It’s also all narrated by Sir David Attenborough, so the British accent makes it all the more interesting (Unless you live in Britain. Then it’ll just be plainly interesting).  ...

Homosexuality and the Church

Last year, I was tabling for our on campus Christian fellowship, holding a box of cookies in my left hand and a handful of fliers in my right. Normally, people don’t come up to us and ask questions regarding what we believe. But for some reason, during my shift, a guy came to grab a cookie and said, “I’m gay. Can I be a Christian?” Woah. Wha? I’m just standing out here on Sproul Plaza giving out free cookies trying to get people to come to our fellowship… And you have to come and hit me with that? Needless to say, I really wasn’t ready for a question like that, but I answered it to...

He is Risen…Now What?

Easter was about a week ago, and churches around the world celebrated by having special services, baptisms, Easter egg hunts for the children, and all sorts of theatrics. (My church had an extremely adorable children’s performance.) For those who have been attending church for any amount of time, we’ve experienced many of these Easter seasons. We fast something for Lent until Good Friday when we fast all meals until we go to a church service and hear about Jesus’ sacrifice. Perhaps we shed tears and repent because we remember the harshness of the cross. Then the service ends and we break...

“Extreme” Christianity

I was sitting in a classroom at Berkeley, listening to an RZIM speaker by the name of Dr. Vince Vitale, who was talking about a pastor friend of his in Africa who was consistently serving in the midst of intense persecution. When asked the question, “What’s one thing that you would like to say to your classmates?” at an Oxford seminar, the pastor responded, “Please do not compromise here in the West what we are dying for in Africa.” Woah. Did you catch that? The magnitude of his plea? Let me give you a little more background on this African pastor. This pastor is someone who knows...

Don’t Forget to Look Up

Imagine this setting: You’re sitting on a bench located on a college campus, near the center of student movement. What do you see? Stressed students walking to class with headphones in their ears, tourist groups (mostly Chinese or Korean, at least in my experience) walking near the libraries, the occasional group of college kids throwing frisbees around or napping. Now, what do you hear? Can you imagine the sounds? Maybe it’s the tour guide, trying to raise their voices so people in the back who aren’t listening can hear them. Maybe it’s the occasional “Heads up!” by the people who threw the...
